Workshops

We encourage your workshop proposals for both days of this year’s Bookfair (May 19 or 20, 2012).

You can submit workshops that are: i) introductions to anarchism or ii) workshops on other topics related to anarchism that explores an anarchism-themed topic in some depth.

Introduction to anarchism workshops are meant as introductions to anarchist ideas and practice (ie. introductions to anarchism itself); they should be aimed at people who are curious about, or new to, anarchist ideas, and should be accessible to non-anarchists.

Workshops on other anarchist-themed topics are intended for people who are already familiar with anarchism, or might identify as anarchists. These are workshops that explore a topic related to anarchist ideas and practice in some detail.

BEFORE submitting a workshop or presentation proposal for the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair, please read our workshop guidelines first.

WORKSHOP GUIDELINES:

  • The DEADLINE for all workshop proposals is March 11, 2012 before 11pm Montreal time (no exceptions).
  • You can submit introduction to anarchism workshops or other anarchist-themed workshops.
  • Introduction to anarchism workshops are meant as introductions to anarchist ideas and practice (ie. introductions to anarchism itself); they should be aimed at people who are curious about, or new to, anarchist ideas, and should be accessible to non-anarchists. Introductory workshops will be presented on both Saturday, May 19 and Sunday May 20.
  • Workshops on other anarchist-themed topics are intended for people who are already familiar with anarchism, or might identify as anarchists. These are workshops that explore a topic related to anarchist ideas and practice in some detail. In-depth workshops will be presented on both Saturday, May 19 and Sunday May 20.
  • Workshops can be proposed to take place in French, English or another language, but the Bookfair collective will ensure that at least half of all workshops are in French-only (to be clear, by French we mean workshops presented in French, NOT translated presentations and/or bilingual workshops). The Bookfair collective will organize whisper translation between English and French for all workshops.
  • “Closed” workshops (eg: women-identified only, people-of-colour only, etc) can be proposed, but they must allow for people to self-define their identities, as per the Bookfair principles, accessibility policy and our commitment to anti-oppression politics.
  • The Bookfair collective encourages workshops that are designed for kids, or for all ages.
  • The Bookfair collective will strive to have at least one-half of all workshops presented by people who identify as women.
  • The Bookfair collective especially encourages workshop proposals by individuals who identify as women, indigenous, people of colour, working class, poor, people with disabilities, trans and/or queer.

  • In-depth workshops that took place last year will not be accepted for a second consecutive year (introduction to anarchism workshops are excepted).
  • We ask that you organize your own audio-visual equipment; please get in touch for info about space limitations.
  • Workshops and presentations are meant to be for a duration of 90-110 minutes (including discussion and question period).
  • The Bookfair collective does not have the means to provide funding for travel or other expenses.
  • We have included the titles of workshops that have been accepted in previous years. We indicate these topics to provide individuals proposing workshops with an idea of the kinds of workshops that have been accepted in the past (and might be accepted again) and to indicate the workshop topics that have yet to be proposed for consideration by the collective.   • You can also propose a Theme Room at the Anarchist Bookfair. A theme room brings together related workshops and presentations in one space for a series of workshops between 11am to 5pm. Some examples of previous theme rooms include: Autonomous Media & Technology Room (2011), Indigenous Solidarity Room 2010, Anti-Capitalist Resistance Room 2010, Anarchist Parent’s Discussion Room 2010.
  • If you propose a Theme Room, at least one-half of all workshops and presentations in the Theme Room must be in French (to be clear, by French we mean workshops presented in French, NOT translated presentations and/or bilingual workshops). We can consider exceptions for languages other than English or French.

Please use the following online form to make a workshop proposal for the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair, or contact us directly at info@anarchistbookfair.ca (you must include all the information below). The deadline to propose a workshop or presentation is MARCH 11, 2012 before 11pm.

Please provide ALL of the following information clearly, meaning filling out all the sections below:

a) Provide a title for your workshop. Choose a title that is self-explanatory (exactly as it will appear in our publicity).

b) Please indicate whether your workshop is an introduction to anarchism workshop or another anarchist-themed topic (ie. a workshop that explores an anarchist-themed or related subject in some depth).

c) Please indicate if you have a preference about when you present your workshop, if accepted (Saturday, May 19 or Sunday, May 20, or either date). NOTE: We cannot guarantee that your workshop will take place on the your preferred date, if accepted.

d) Please indicate if your workshop will be in French, English or another language (to be clear, by French we mean workshops presented in French, NOT translated presentations and/or bilingual workshops).

e) Provide a description -- as long as you need -- to describe your proposal. This description will be read by the Bookfair collective to help us decide which proposals to accept.

f) Provide a short (75 words max.) description of your workshop (exactly as it will appear in our publicity).

g) Provide a one-line description of the individual or group presenting the workshop. If you are proposing a panel, please provide a one-line biography for each participant.

h) If applicable, please indicate here if your workshop is designed for kids or for all ages.

i) Please indicate whether your workshop requires internet access, so that we can properly organize.

j) Provide a contact e-mail AND phone number (for Bookfair internal communications only). Provide a single contact e-mail that you check regularly.

k) RECIPROCITY: If your workshop is chosen to be part of the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair, we ask that you promote the Bookfair & Festival of Anarchy on your website, blog, facebook group and/or announcements list, as applicable (once in mid-April, and then again in early-May), and as much as possible, also help with flyering and postering. Please indicate here how you can help with promotion of the Bookfair.
