The Anarchist Bookfair takes place in two buildings, which are across from each other: i)the CEDA (2515 rue Delisle), an adult education and community center based in Little Burgundy/St-Henri, and ii) the Georges-Vanier Cultural Center across from the CEDA. Both are just a few minutes from Lionel-Groulx métro.

In the main Bookfair auditorium and the adjacent Zine Room, there are over 100 booksellers, zinesters, distributors and groups from all over Montreal, Quebec, North America and beyond, sharing their publications and materials, most of which are hard or impossible to find at mainstream book stores. Many materials are available for free, and much is published specifically to be available at the Bookfair.

During the weekend, there is a Anarchist Film Room screening alternative films and documentaries, while the walls of the Bookfair venue are covered with the works of anti-authoritarian artists as part of Art & Anarchy. Last year also featured an Autonomous Media and Technology Room.

Free childcare is available at the Bookfair at the Kid Zone; kids and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend!

There are also workshops and presentations throughout the weekend, in English and French. Some are intended as introductions to anarchism for those who are new to anarchy, while others explore an anarchist-themed subject in some depth.

In general, during the Bookfair, don’t hesitate to ask members of the Bookfair collective, or folks who are tabling or presenting, any question or inquiry you have about the ideas and practice of anarchism. The Bookfair collective actively strives to create an accessible event.

The Bookfair site is adjacent to a large park and sports field, and when the weather is nice (May in Montreal is usually quite beautiful), a large part of the Bookfair can be about kicking around a soccer ball or hanging out with friends, and soon-to-be friends.

The entire Bookfair is free, and open to all; however, your donations are encouraged, as each year, after meeting our expenses, the Bookfair aims to support local projects with a financial donation.

Photos from previous Bookfairs, which give you an idea of the atmosphere of during the Bookfair Weekend, are linked HERE.

At the DIRA, you can borrow or consult hundreds of books, newspapers, zines, archival materials and more. We function on the basis of a non-hierarchical, equal and anti-authoritarian structure, and we distribute information for free so that it’s accessible to everyone: because ideas are not for sale, they are to be shared!
ANARCHIST BOOKFAIR ACCESSIBILITY FUND: The accessibility fund will help to make the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair accessible in various ways. Last year, the fund supported sign language translation. It has also helped to pay for the cost of two rooms in the Georges-Vanier Cultural Center, a wheelchair-accessible building across from the CEDA that again this year will host a number of workshops. This fund will help the Bookfair collective meet its stated goal of striving towards an accessible event, in diverse ways, including the possibility of moving more activities to accessible spaces in future years.

The G20 Legal Defence fund is managed by a group of six local anti-capitalist community organizers who are not facing legal charges themselves, and will ensure that legal funds are properly disbursed.
original banners and posters

This year’s Bookfair again features original banners and posters by the Beehive Collective, including “Free Trade Area of the Americas”, “Plan Colombia”, “The True Cost of Coal” as well as recent works and surprises.

The Beehive Collective has gained international recognition for its ‘graphics campaigns’ illustrating the interconnections between corporate globalization, poverty, histories of colonization and resistance. The Hive has evolved a unique approach to ‘cross-pollinating the grassroots’ by building campaigns around graphics and using them to engage audiences. The all-volunteer Beehive has its home base in Eastern Maine since. Bees in Toronto are currently designing graphics and workshops focused on the G8/G20 Summits in June 2010. All our work is anti-copyright. Info: www.beehivecollective.org

mixed media

This work, through the use of fake medical documents, tells the story of different objects used for office work. In breaking with the life trajectory of these objects, it is now possible for them to become the main agents of their artistic existence.

Through a multidisciplinary practice, Antoine Cloutier-Bélisle projects, out of banality, everyday objects and reveals their beauty, their fragility and their humanity. In doing so, he aims to provoke a larger questioning of the ways our society works.

drawing

The work explores the notion and perpetration of the violence of scale. Embodied in distopic landscapes, consumption, mass production, the relentless exploitation of the natural world, the work expresses the violence of scale and the culture of alienation it engenders.

Karen Boyles is a Montreal-based artist, woodworker and organic grower who is hell-bent on creating art that means something in an apathetic art world.

performance with card paper made by the artist

A performance within the Art & Anarchy exhibition where I sign autographs in order to question ideas of identity. By questioning my celebrity, I look at the hierarchy that classes individuals.

Barbara Mendoza Denis expresses, through careful works, her revolt and desire to open up horizons and borders. She produces seductive and meaningful pieces in order to bring the spectator to question their own well-being and their position as a social actor.

ANARCHIST BOOKFAIR FILM ROOM
SUNDAY, MAY 22, 11am-5pm
ROOM 305 — CEDA (2515 rue Delisle, métro Lionel-Groulx)

Throughout the day on SUNDAY, May 22, the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair will host a Film Room, showing both feature and short films related to anarchism or anarchist-supported struggles.

This year’s Film Room includes the Montreal premiere screenings of: “In the Land of the Free” (USA 2010), “Tales from the G20” (Toronto 2011), and “Bastards of Utopia” (Croatian with English subtitles). We will also be showing the feature film “De La Servitude Moderne” (France 2009) as well as short films from Emmanuelle Lippé, Nicolas van Caloen & Juan Pablo Lepore, Andréann Cossette Viau, Micky Morin, Sofi Périard, Hugo Le Bleu-Tadros, Sara Dupéré and others. Full details below.

11am-12pm

De La Servitude Moderne

Jean-François Brient et Victor León Fuentes / 53 min / FR / France / 2009

De la servitude moderne is a book and a 52 minute documentary film which was completely independently produced. The central objective of this film is to update the condition of the modern slavery within the framework of the totalitarian commodity system and to make visible the forms of mystification which conceals this servile condition. This film was made with the sole aim of attacking head-on the dominant system of organizing this world.

12pm-1:30pm:

In the Land of the Free (MONTREAL PREMIERE)

Vadim Jean / 84 min / ENG / 2010

In the Land of the Free tells the shocking and unbelievable story of Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King, three black men from rural Louisiana who were held in solitary confinement in the biggest prison in the U.S., an 18,000-acre former slave plantation known as Angola. Woodfox and Wallace, founding members of the first prison chapter of the Black Panther Party, worked along with King to speak out against the inhumane treatment and racial segregation in the prison. King was released in 2001 after almost thirty years of solitary confinement. Woodfox and Wallace, convicted in the highly contested stabbing death of white prison guard Brent Miller, remain in Angola where they have spent more than thirty-six years in solitary confinement. This documentary tells the ongoing story of the case of these three extraordinary men.

1:30pm-2pm:

Dehors

Emmanuelle Lippé / Full Instinct productions / 28 min / Montréal / FR & ENG / 2010

“Monday morning, I feel like running away. The metro is packed, it’s too hot and this world is beating too fast. Life is underlined but underlived. How long can we take it? Dehors takes us out of everyday life and brings up the ultimate question: How can we live differently?”

2pm-2:20 pm:

IMPA, Usine récupérée, cité culturelle

Nicolas van Caloen & Juan Pablo Lepore / 17 min / Argentine / Spanish, subtitled in French / 2009

This short documentary tells the story of the struggle for the first “recovered” factory in Argentina. In 1998, while the managers of IMPA tried to transform the cooperative into a company in order to shut down the business and keep the money, the workers decided the take over their factory and create a self-managed cooperative. This factory is the starting point of the National Movement of Recovered Companies of Argentina. It’s a powerful example of alternative anti-capitalist self-management. Shot in Argentinan in July and September 2009 during a major mobilization. This short documentary is part of the documentary project Semences in which we share the important work of many horizontal and anti-capitalist social movements in the Americas.

2:20pm-3pm:

Short Films from Télé Sans Frontières

Again this year the Anarchist Bookfair film room will be featuring short films from Télé Sans Frontières, covering diverse subjects and themes from the underground of Montreal.

- Paroles d’un oublié d’Hochelag’ – Andréann Cossette Viau / 8 min / FR / Québec / 2010
Short documentary of the reality lived by a forgotten person of Hochelaga.
- Chienne de vie – 8 min / FR / Québec / 2010
A short documentary about street youth and their dogs.
- THC – Micky Morin / 5 min / FR / Québec / 2009
Highly controversial treatment – Traitement hautement controversé.
- Marre de tout ce trop qui m’engloutit – Sofi Périard / 6 min / FR / Québec / 2009
She smokes and drinks, confined to her bed, waiting for a response, from whatever is submerging and paralyzing her.
- Injection Supervisé – Hugo Le Bleu-Tadros / 8 min / FR / Québec / 2009
A short documentary about supervised injection sites, such as Insite in Vancouver, and the urgency of opening one in Quebec.
- Joyeux festin — Sara Dupéré / 2 min / FR / Québec / 2009
A bloody orgy of spaghetti sauce on a bed of garbage.

3pm-4pm:

Tales from the G20 (MONTREAL PREMIERE)

Open Media Initiative / 55 min / EN / Canada / 2011

In June 2010, leaders from the twenty largest economies met in Toronto with representatives of corporate interests to discuss the policies that would shape the world for everyone else. Exclusion zones, overlapping layers of security fencing and an estimated 25,000 police and military personnel transformed the downtown area into an armed camp. Over 1.3 billion dollars were spent on security measures, more than all previous G8/G20 meetings combined. This documentary traces the overt breakdown in civil liberties that occurred during the Summit, from unmarked vans with snatch squads of plainclothes police to the pre-emptive arrest of activists now facing years in prison for organizing demonstrations. Through street level footage, interviews with organizers and city residents, the filmmakers hear stories from the peoples’ side of the fence and explore the Orwellian tactics that increasingly permeate policing in Western democracies.

4pm-5pm:

Bastards of Utopia (MONTREAL PREMIERE)

Maple Razsa and Pacho Velez / 54 min / Croatian with English subtitles / 2010

Three Croatian activists struggle to change the world. As children, they lived through the violent collapse of Yugoslavia. But now, amid the aftershocks of socialism’s failure, they fight in their own way for a new leftism. In the middle of the struggle, a skeptical American is won over by their cause and even goes to jail with them. The activists, whether clashing with police or squatting in an old factory, risk everything to live their politics. But as the setbacks mount, will they give up the fight? The film, shot during years of fieldwork with a Croatian anarchist collective, applies EnMasseFilm’s unique blend of observation, direct participation and critical reflection to this misunderstood political movement. Its portrayal of activism is both empathetic and unflinching — an engaged, elegant meditation on the struggle to re-imagine leftist politics and the power of a country’s youth.

But we need your help and support in distributing these materials widely! Please read below about some simple steps you can take to help promote the Bookfair.

The Bookfair emphasizes outreach not just to anarchists, but also to people who might be interested or curious about anarchist ideas and practice. For that reason, we seek to poster, flyer and otherwise spread the word widely throughout Montreal (not just to other anarchists who all know about the Bookfair anyways). This year’s Bookfair will take place over two days (ie. there will be tabling, as well as workshops and other presentations throughout the weekend of May 21-22) and we look forward to welcoming many more newcomers who attend the Bookfair for the first time.

We would like to have posters on display, and flyers available, at community centers, schools, colleges and universities, laundromats, cafés, bars, dépanneurs and anywhere and everywhere else people might see them. We would also like to make announcements about the Bookfair and Festival of Anarchy at diverse events and gatherings throughout April and May. We would like to have posters up at key outdoor locations in the City as well as in all the main neighbourhoods in Montreal and surrounding areas. Online, we want to promote the Bookfair on websites, e-mail lists as well as social networking sites like facebook.

For all that to happen, WE NEED YOUR HELP (we especially ask for the support of people who attend the Bookfair as vendors and presenters).

Please consider the following ways you can help out with Bookfair outreach:

ONLINE

* Post a link to the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair website — www.anarchistbookfair.ca — from your website. A jpg icon of this year’s main Bookfair image and poster is available in the “Downloads” section of our website: http://www.anarchistbookfair.ca/downloads

* Share our final e-mail callout on announcements lists. Just get in touch to get the most recent e-mail callout (info@anarchistbookfair.ca).

* If you’re on facebook, invite your friends to the event that has been set up for the Bookfair: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=181370161878661

IN MONTREAL:
